UCLA Student Lauren Wilbur attends Los Angeles Fashion Week for the first time.
Attending LA Fashion Week was an inspiring and unforgettable experience, offering a window into the dynamic and fast-paced world of fashion.
The energy was electric, excitement filling the room as the event unfolded. This event was not just a fashion show but a meticulously choreographed production, where every participant—from the bartenders to the press, models, managers, media, photographers, directors, and designers—played a vital role. The passion and dedication of everyone involved were palpable, contributing to the creativity and passion that defined the event.
A standout moment for me was spending time backstage, where I had the privilege of interviewing several models. Many had only recently embarked on their modeling careers, illustrating how attainable success can be for those who pursue their dreams with tenacity. Each model’s journey underscores the notion that any goal can be achieved with focus, hard work, and ambition. The models embodied grace and poise on the runway, bringing the designers’ visions to life.
Two collections that caught my attention were Willfredo Gerardo and Diyanni Surf. These designers attributed colorful and apt for their models and captivated the audience's attention during the designer's runway debut. The models representing these brands showcased not only their talent but also a deep sense of pride in presenting these extraordinary designs. The attention to detail and the artistry behind the collections were captivating, leaving a lasting impression on me.
Journalism is Male Dominated.
It was striking to note the underrepresentation of female reporters at the event. The majority of individuals reporting on the occasion were men, and being one of the few women present, I felt a strong sense of empowerment.
This highlighted the ongoing need for improved gender inclusivity, especially in media positions, within the fashion industry, despite its reputation for creativity and innovation.
Final Thoughts
My first LA Fashion Week proved to be a valuable experience that further solidified my admiration for the fashion world.
The event underscored the creativity, commitment, and inclusiveness that characterize this industry, while also shedding light on areas where progress is still needed.
xoxo,
Lauren Wilbur
